Amazon’s Bezos Fuels Tablet Wars With $199 Kindle - Bloomberg

Jeff Bezos is channeling Steve Jobs. It’s mid-September and the wiry billionaire founder of Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is at his brand new corporate headquarters in Seattle, in a building named “Day One South” after his conviction that 17-year-old Amazon is still in its infancy.
Almost giddy with excitement, Bezos retrieves one by one the new crop of dirt-cheap Kindle e-readers --- they start at $79 --- from a hidden perch on a chair tucked into a conference room table. When he’s done showing them off, he stands up, and, for an audience of a single journalist, announces, “Now, I’ve got one more thing to show you.” He waits a half-beat to make sure the reference to Jobs’ famous line from Apple Inc. (AAPL) presentations hasn’t been missed, then gives his notorious barking laugh.
With that, Bezos pulls out the Kindle Fire, Amazon’s long- anticipated tablet computer --- and the first credible response to the Apple iPad,Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its Oct. 3 edition.
Unlike a wave of other tablets that have emerged hopefully only to flop, such as the Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) TouchPad, the Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. Xoom, and the Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM)PlayBook, the Kindle Fire has a good shot at turning the newest theater of war in high-tech into a two-tablet battle.

Yellow Media halts dividends, takes $2.9-billion charge | Investing | Financial Post

Yellow Media Inc said it will take a goodwill impairment charge of $2.9 billion in the third quarter and do away with future dividends.

The telephone directory publisher has been struggling to switch from print to the digital medium while managing its debt burden.

The impairment charge is a non-cash item and does not affect its operations, the company said in a statement.

The company and its lenders have agreed to amend the terms of its credit agreement following the rating downgrade.

Yellow Media gets about three-quarters of its revenue from selling advertisements in its Yellow Pages and related business directories, but the number of advertisements in its printed directories has been falling at a fast clip.

Yellow Media shares, which were worth around $14 in late 2007, closed at 59 cents on Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

BBC News - Updates improve Facebook and Twitter connections

Facebook members will soon be able to pipe their profile directly to a connected Twitter account.

The social networking giant said it was working on the feature in a document sent to developers about upcoming changes.

Before now linking to Twitter was only possible from Facebook pages which are meant for bands, public figures and businesses.

Facebook said linking was coming "soon" but gave no specific date.

The mention of the forthcoming connection to Twitter came as Facebook unveiled its "subscription" system which works in a similar fashion to Twitter's "follower" feature.

Redux Media Launches VideoCast Network | Mediacaster Magazine - Broadband & Content

Montreal-based online advertising firm Redux Media has launched its VideoCast video advertising network in Canada.

The VideoCast Network is designed to offer agencies and brand marketers new online ad services and products, including in-stream and in-banner ads with pre-roll video, overlay, video-in-video and custom video creation.

VideoCast also provides advertisers with targeting and data measurement capabilities.

"The growth of online video consumption and subsequent inventory growth has exploded in the last few years," explains Redux Media President Claude Dugas. "Where the average online visitor was watching a relatively small amount of video content five years ago, the latest figures show that users are presently creating, consuming and sharing tens of billions of video streams per month in just the US alone. The question now beckons, how do marketers cut through the clutter to deliver impactful messaging for their brands and what is the next step in the evolution of online video advertising?"

Redux Media is described as the fourth largest Canadian owned online advertising network in Canada and ranks 33rd largest network in the US. It launched in 2005, and now counts some 2,500 quality partner websites aggregated into fifteen niche content categories.

CRTC slaps new conditions on telcos | FP Tech Desk | Financial Post

Striking an unexpectedly interventionist tone, the federal broadcast regulator Wednesday slapped a host of new conditions on the country’s biggest telecommunications conglomerates.

In a bid to curb “anti-competitive” behaviour between BCE Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., Shaw Communications Inc. and Quebecor Media Inc. — firms with considerable market power through their collective control of most of the country’s TV, Internet and wireless networks as well as the television content flowing over them — the regulator has enacted a new “code of conduct” and other provisions designed to guard the market place from disruptions, such as programming black outs.

Ad Company Omnicom Opts Out of Digital Spotlight | Agency News - Advertising Age

All roads lead to digital, but when it comes to the Big Four agency holding companies, one of them -- Omnicom Group -- is taking the road less traveled.
French holding company Publicis Groupe has spent billions swallowing up massive digital agencies DigitasRazorfish and most recently Rosetta; WPP has been rolling up a series of smaller acquisitions to create Possible Worldwide, its first global digital-only network; and Interpublic Group of Cos. has been working to export older acquisitions R/GA and Huge around the world. But U.S.-based Omnicom, the No. 2 holding company with $12.5 billion in global revenue, has been quiet when it comes to its digital strategy.
Its philosophy has been to inject digital competence into its core agency brands, DDBBBDO and TBWA, and grow capabilities within its highly profitable Diversified Agency Services (DAS) division, which handles below-the-line work. But by integrating -- or as detractors might say, burying -- digital capabilities within its larger, more well-known brands, is it building the agency of the future, one in which digital isn't a silo but inherent in everything? Or is it devaluing the complexity of the technology needed to market in 2015 and beyond?

Canadiens prospect draws comparisons to Gionta

With 64 players in training camp, a Montreal Canadiens prospect has to find a way to get noticed.

The ones who stand five-foot-eight — at least on paper — need to work that much harder.

Brendan Gallagher has been up to the task in the early going. The 19-year-old right wing scored the tying goal in Sunday's intra-squad game before setting up the winner in front of a full house of enthusiastic fans at the Bell Sports Complex, the Canadiens' suburban practice facility.

"He's not a big player but has a big heart," Canadiens coach Jacques Martin said. "He goes to the net, he's not afraid and has good hands.

"He had an outstanding season last year with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League and he had a very good camp this summer with Team Canada's world junior team.

"I think he's shown over a year and a half that he's been a part of our organization that he has a lot of character and a lot of determination and he reminds me a little bit of a Brian Gionta."

"That's a really high compliment," Gallagher responded to the coach's comparison. "Obviously that's exciting to hear."

Mobile Ad Network InMobi Gets $200M From Softbank Corp. | Digital - Advertising Age

Mobile ad network InMobi has secured $200 million in funding from Japanese holding company Softbank Corp. this week.

For mobile, that's a boatload of money.

But considering who it's up against -- increasingly dominant mobile players such as Google and Apple, not to mention established independents such as Jumptap and Millennial Media -- this 4-year-old Indian company will need it.

Shaw Communications will begin deployment of a Wi-Fi network later this year, with plans for customer service launch in spring 2012.

Shaw reports it will work with telecom provider Cisco to provide Wi-Fi broadband access across an extensive wireless network planned in Western Canada.

Shaw says access points will be provided in various markets and venues, including highly secure coverage in targeted areas like sporting facilities and transit systems. Location based advertising will be incorporated into the service.

The network will support connectivity to Wi-Fi enabled, rich media devices like tablets, mobile smart phones and desktop computers. The service will be offered to Shaw Internet customers.

Windows Server 8: The Ultimate Cloud OS? | ZDNet

Since last Thursday, I was ordered under strict nondisclosure to keep my mouth shut. And that was really hard for me to do because I could barely contain my enthusiasm for what is probably the most significant server operating system release that Microsoft has ever planned to roll out.

Nothing from Microsoft, and I mean literally nothing has ever been this ambitious or has tried to achieve so much in a single server product release since Windows 2000, when Active Directory was first introduced.

Last week, a group of about 30 computer journalists were invited to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond to get an exclusive two-day preview of what is tentatively being referred to as “Windows Server 8″.

PayPal To Unveil New Payments Platform For Merchants, Will Include Location-Based Offers And More | TechCrunch

PayPal held an event today in Los Angeles for merchants to get a early look into the eBay owned payments giant’s new technologies. As CEO Scott Thompson says in a blog post, PayPal is re-imagining money and making it work better for merchants and consumers – whatever device you’re on, wherever you are in the world, and however you prefer to pay (whether that’s cash, credit, or installments).

The company says it will be rolling out a one-stop shop for merchants, both online and local businesses, to manage payments from customers. Details are sparse but PayPal says that new features will include location-based offers, making payments accessible from any device and offering more payments flexibility to customers after they’ve checked out.

But that distance represents a journey of many years for l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, which on Wednesday counted itself home at last in a real orchestral hall.

Quebec luring video game jobs from U.S. - The Globe and Mail

Government incentives big attraction

Quebec has become a preferred destination for some of the hottest videogame makers to set up shop, thanks to government incentives coming their way, reports Reuters in this piece.

Companies ranging from Electronic Arts to Ubisoft have been drawn to the province as a result of a refundable tax credit that subsidizes 37.5 per cent of a videogame company's payroll. And that's not all: There are more credits for companies that make French versions of their games, the piece reports.

That's had a big impact: citing economic development agency Invest Quebec, Reuters reports that 86 companies and 8,236 jobs have moved to Quebec as a result of the program, on which Quebec spent $100-million last year, up from $83-million in 2009.

Montreal heart researcher stripped of status - Montreal - CBC News

A prominent researcher with the Montreal Heart Institute has been stripped of his lab, privileges and status following an investigation into scientific misconduct.
The institute launched an investigation earlier this year after two studies by Dr. Zhiguo Wang were retracted from prominent scientific journals.
Those studies, conducted in 2007 and 2008, explored irregular heart rhythms. The research was done at the cellular level and did not involve patients.
At the time, Wang blamed the error on a mix-up of images used to illustrate the data. He said the research itself was solid and had been reproduced.

Canada News: Travelling space show too big for Canadian museums - thestar.com

MONTREAL — The Canadian Space Agency’s elaborate plans to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2010 with a travelling international exhibit backfired because the show was too big.

The original idea was to bring “Cosmomania: The Incredible Space Adventure” from France to Canada to criss-cross the country and visit museums and science centres.

Emails provided under an access-to-information request show several centres were told they couldn’t present the Cosmomania exhibit — or they rejected it — because of a lack of space.

The information obtained by the Canadian Press reveals Cosmomania ended up costing taxpayers $637,756. That included $288,226 to rent it from the French museum that originally organized the exhibit.

The idea was the show would be free for the public and that the space agency would pick up all shipping, set-up and dismantling costs.

Cosmomania, a 50-year retrospective of space exploration, was originally organized by the Cite de l’espace museum near Toulouse and visited several French cities.

But after its arrival in Canada, only two cities ended up hosting the space history exposition.
